2Including your kids in baking or cooking is a brilliant way to keep them entertained indoors. With a little planning and preparation, you and your kids will not only have lots of fun, but you will also have an excuse to make sure your kitchen is fully stocked with all our kitchen essentials.

Here are a few pointers to consider when baking or cooking with your kids.

What to think about before you start:

  • Plan ahead. Choose a tried and tested recipe and make sure you have all the ingredients and kitchen equipment you’ll need.
  • Make sure your kitchen is clean and uncluttered, to create optimal working space.
  • Consider the table or counter you will be working on and get the right height chair or step for your child to sit or stand on.
  • To minimise mess, cover your kitchen floor with newspaper or cardboard. Be sure to stick it down, to minimise the risk of someone tripping over it.
  • Clean as you go. Have a sink with hot soapy water ready, and let the kids take turns to wash dishes as they are dirtied – they often love this part the most!
  • Keep danger at bay. Scan your kitchen and keep hazardous items such as sharp knives or hot water out of reach.

French toast

French toast is a great option for breakfast, lunch or as a snack. This is an easy, no-fuss introduction for kids who’ve never baked or cooked before. They will enjoy breaking the eggs, mixing the mixture and dipping the bread. Best leave the frying to an adult. Leave the best for last with tasty toppings such as berries, banana and Nutella.

Pancakes

Similar to French toast, this family favourite is simple to make and can be ready in 20 minutes. Involve them in the making of the batter, and the dressing of the pancakes. If your kids are under 13, best leave the cooking for the adults. Kids always enjoy a pancake flip, so why not make it a competition between mom and dad to see who can flip the most pancakes?

Smoothies

Kids love smoothies and it is often the clever mom’s way to make sure her tots get the necessary cold-fighting vitamins during the winter months. Allow them to explore different tastes by choosing the ingredients they want to use. Kids between three and six can assist with adding yogurt, milk, honey or juice, while the older ones can help peel and even chop fruit with assistance.

Baking biscuits provides high entertainment value, as your kids enjoy being creative making their favourite animals and shapes with the dough, or painting the biscuits with food colouring. Choose an easy recipe and be prepared to possibly do the last shift of cookie cutting on your own, as the young ones in particular might struggle to stay dedicated to the task.
